The Midi-Pyrenees is one of the largest regions of France, stretching down to the border with Spain in the south, and landlocked on all sides. Home to the Dordogne Valley, the Aveyron Gorge and the city of Toulouse, it’s a region rich in both history and scenery.
One of the sunniest places in France, it’s a destination one can visit at any time of year.
A wonderful place for exploring the outdoors, there are four very different but equally impressive natural parks within the Midi-Pyrenees and the vast, diverse landscapes include hills and valleys, huge lakes and crystal clear rivers, gorges, canals and mountain ranges.
Visitors will also find plenty of cultural and man-made attractions, old and new. In addition to the pretty medieval villages scattered across the region, there are the Gothic houses of Cordes sur Ciel, and the collection of historic buildings that make Albi A UNESCO World Heritage Site as well as the more modern creations, like the Millau Viaduct and the Canal des Deux Mers.
Here in southern France living well is the top priority and visitors can expect superb food and wine, a laid back attitude and warm, friendly people.

Activities for kids
Belcastel
This wonderfully picturesque little town makes a great day out. Walk along the river and stop for a picnic in the shade, or treat yourself to the exquisite foie gras served in town. Later, wander up to the 1000-year-old chateau for a look at the amazing views and the animation work that adorns the interiors.
San Cirq Lapopie
A great destination for walkers and foodies, adults will enjoy the gourmet restaurants, wine museum and quirky arts and crafts shops, whilst children will love picnicking by the river. There is a safe, roped-off swimming area next to a river beach and older kids can rent canoes. There are also good walks along the river to the gorges.
Steam Train
Take a ride in an old-fashioned steam train. The one hour trip from Martel to St Denis affords glorious views of the Dordogne Valley - a great trip for all ages.
Parc & Château de Columbier
With a medieval chateau, wildlife park, gardens and games there’s loads to do see and do here. Animals include bears, lions, monkeys and more, and there is also a petting zoo. Picnics can be enjoyed in the lovely gardens where there are also outdoor games like boules and giant chess, and a playground.
Pradinas Animal Park
Focused on European wildlife, this 15-hectare park is home to pigs, goats and chickens as well as lynxes, bears, wolves and monkeys. You can tour the park on foot or by donkey and there is also a mini-train and farming exhibits.
Villeneuve sur Aveyron
There are three restaurants, a playground for the kids, various shops and a market on Sundays. During the summer various festivals and night markets are also held.
Villefranche
This pleasant town has a wide choice of places to eat, and great shopping. The tourist train keeps youngsters occupied and there are pleasant walks beside the river.
