Halkidiki, Greece
Halkidiki, Greece
Shaped like Poseidon’s trident, Halkidiki, in northern Greece, is composed of three peninsulas that reach out like fingers into the clear waters of the Aegean Sea.
Blessed with hundreds of pristine beaches backed by fragrant pine trees, it’s a paradise of vibrant greens and blues.
Each peninsula has its own character - Kassandra is the busiest and boasts the most beach resorts, Sithonia is a popular holiday destination for Greeks and has an authentic atmosphere and lots of traditional villages, and Athos is a centuries old monastic community that is closed to women. Together they add up to a stunningly varied holiday destination.
Lush forests are criss-crossed by hiking and cycling trails, archaeological sites provide an insight into the region’s long and colourful history, and excellent restaurants and tavernas attest to the rich gastronomic heritage of northern Greece.
With around 1000 beaches, Halkidiki has more than enough sun and sand to go around. Some beaches are several miles long, others are tiny coves, but all offer access to the clam, warm sea: a true playground for toddlers, sailors, snorkelers, paddle boarders and scuba divers.
