This sophisticated design hotel and resort, located on the rugged south-western tip of Portugal, is an ideal destination for active family holidays.
Set back from a long, sandy beach, the resort sits within a wild and windswept national park, offering the ideal balance of nature and luxury. The bold contemporary architecture is a perfect match for the dramatic setting of the resort, whilst the organic interiors, featuring local stone, cork and wicker are both stylishly minimalist and warmly welcoming.
Martinhal features 37 hotel rooms (some interconnecting) with partial or full sea views, as well as dozens of sleek self-catering villas and houses. Conceived very much as a family resort, children of all ages are expertly catered for. A baby concierge can reserve baby and toddler gear - from cots to sterilisers - and children of all ages are well cared for, either at the crèche or a series of kids clubs for children aged up to 16.
The culinary offerings are a highlight at Martinhal and the three excellent restaurants all offer fresh creative dishes that put a new spin on Portuguese classics. The focus is on local, sustainable products, so expect plenty of fresh seafood, seasonal fruits and vegetables and wine lists featuring Portuguese-only vintages. All restaurants have special baby and children menus and the thoughtful layout, which places play areas adjacent to restaurants and snack bars, means children can entertain themselves between courses.
A stay at Martinhal is all about action: at the resort one can play tennis and padel tennis, join fitness classes or swim in one of the five pools, whilst outside there is the national park to explore on foot, bike or jeep. Steady breezes and an ocean-side location make it a mecca for lovers or wind- and water sports and guests can practice surfing, windsurfing, kayaking, SUP, Kitesurfing, karting and more.

The Area
Sagres is quite unlike anywhere else in southern Portugal. Located on the western tip of the Algarve and occupying the most south-westerly point in Europe, it’s isolated position gives it an end-of-the-world feel.
Up until the 15th century, this was as far as the known world extended. It was here that Henry the Navigator, the Portuguese prince who ushered in the Age of Discovery, brought together ship builders, cartographers, astronomers and mariners and challenged them to find out what lay beyond the horizon.
Today, Sagres sits within the Costa Vicentina national park, a protected coastal area of dramatic natural beauty characterised by towering cliffs, pounding seas and dozens of vast, empty beaches.
Sagres town perches on a headland, overlooking a picturesque harbour that is still a centre for lobster fishing and boatbuilding. Here one can find a handful of casual bars and eateries, but little else. Mass tourism has yet to reach this remote corner of the Algarve and those that visit therefore tend to be of an adventurous mind-set.
Surfers, windsurfers, kite surfers and body boarders all come to enjoy the wind and waves whilst hikers and mountain bikers find solitude and spectacular scenery on land.
Sagres enjoys around 300 days of sunshine per year and the constant breezes coming off the Atlantic take the edge of the heat in mid-summer.
It is around 20 minutes from Lagos and the nearest airport is Faro, 1 hour and 30 minutes away.
