With their spacious, tastefully decorated interiors surrounded by peaceful gardens, these self-catered guest houses are the perfect place for a family vacation surrounded by nature. Located in the heart of Ria Formosa Natural Park, the Algarvian Nature Escape has 2 pools and a natural swimming lake and lush gardens. Much of the property is left intentionally untended to benefit Ria Formosa’s wildlife. For guests who enjoy nature watching, it’s easy to find a quiet spot to see storks, hoopoes, and chameleons.
Everything here is designed with young families in mind. Children tend to play together on the grounds, which are very safe (both pools and the lake are surrounded by fences). Breakfast can be delivered to your house and the on-site shop also sells a variety of ready-made meals and snacks. Each house has its own herb garden, and the property’s vegetable garden produces fresh, organic fruits and vegetables. A neighbour sells oysters and clams for guests in the mood for fresh seafood.
Ria Formosa Natural Park and the Algarve in general offer lots to do, from biking trails to beautiful beaches to historic castles. The hosts also organise some kid-friendly activities on the property such as stargazing, frog spotting, and crab races.

The Area
Olhao is the largest fishing port of the Algarve, and serves as a gateway to several beautiful islands nearby, which are known for their white-sand beaches perfect for swimming, relaxing, and even snorkelling. The town is known for its municipal market that combines the fish market, which offers the day’s fresh catch for sale, and the fruit and vegetable market. Olhao is also known for being a great jumping-off point for the nearby wetlands of the Ria Formosa Natural Park.
The town itself is picturesque and quiet (though it gets busier in the summer). The white, square houses denote the area’s Moorish influences. Don’t forget to keep an eye out for azulejos, traditional blue-tiles that depict some of the historic events of the town. And no visit to Olhao would be complete without tasting some of the delicious fresh fish and shellfish served in most of the area’s restaurants.
